The 55yearold appeared in Mareeba Magistrates Court supported by his three children, handcuffed with his head shaved, after his arrest at a Cape Tribulation camping ground yesterday, The Courier Mail reports.
Mr Carleton, the branch manager of Bendigo Bank in Atherton, vanished without a China Group Tours trace nearly two weeks ago a day before he was to be quizzed by private investigators over alleged financial irregularities.
He faced one charge of stealing with prosecutors preparing an exofficio indictment and did not apply for bail. He has been remanded in custody to reappear on August 30.

Police prosecutor Brad Hafner said the banker had made "full and frank admissions" to police about the alleged theft "in excess of $3 million".
Outside court, his visibly upset and clearly bewildered adult children said they had turned up to court "looking for answers like everybody else".
Dean Carleton, flanked by sisters Megan and Kelly, said "we're just glad to know he is safe".
He said his mother Pam did not attend because she was "still in shock''.
"We just hope to pick up the pieces and get our lives back on track,'" Dean said.
No evidence was presented to the court about the alleged theft or how Mr Carleton was allegedly spending the funds.
It is also unclear how long he was in hiding at the camping ground after he was last seen riding into the Private China Tours Herberton Ranges on his Honda trailbike on July 13.
Police and bank investigators have been probing the alleged disappearance of $3.1 million from term deposits lodged with the Bendigo Bank branch in Atherton. Mr Carleton was due to meet with financial crime investigators over alleged misappropriation of funds, understood to be drawing on customer's term deposits, over the past decade.
Mr Carleton managed the north Queensland branch for 20 years and his service in the town prompted several local supporters to express concern over the days he was missing.
